Film Screening and Discussion

Sofia Coppola, daughter of Francis Ford Coppola (of Godfather, Apocalypse Now, etc. fame), proved her own directorial chops with this movie, her second feature film about an unlikely friendship in a foreign setting. Lost in Translation is a delicate movie that balances a subtle melancholic tone with moments of poignancy, humor, and romance.

The film follows Bob Harris (Bill Murray), an aging American actor who begrudgingly accepts a whiskey commercial shot in Tokyo, and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), a young newlywed who is confused in her recent marriage to a successful photographer. Bob and Charlotte quickly become friends, sharing a similar disillusionment with their lives while they explore the dazzling lights and sounds of contemporary Tokyo.
